Programme #032: 05/02/19 - Trains & Railways

A number of factors aligned to bring about this month’s theme. There’s been a new vinyl pressing of the Kronos Quartet’s definitive first performance of Steve Reich’s “Different Trains”, conveniently close to International Holocaust Day. I recently located a copy of a rather obscure Gerry Mulligan LP that I coveted in my youth called “The Age of Steam” and a recent 12 inch that I bought sounded distinctly like a steam engine. So I’ve riveted together a bunch of tracks about trains and railways, hopefully keeping away from some of the most obvious choices!

Programme #031: Dub Revolutions

Our friends at The Record Club in Shipley have just had their January evening, which was focused on Dub and we were pleased to be asked to contribute a short set. Taking the theme of Dub Revolutions (a pun on New Year resolutions – get it?) we started looking back through a load of militant and righteous records, particularly from the 1970s. For this show we’ve stretched out our original set but kept the theme.

Programme #030: The Long Ones That Nearly Got Away
Whenever we draw up a playlist for a programme there are some fantastic tracks that we have to reject because we just don’t have the time for them. It’s especially true for the longer tracks on albums; we can only usually indulge ourselves from time to time. This year, however, there has been such a lot of fine but extended music that we decided to play a few of these tracks in this show. All this music newly released in 2018, all on vinyl and, with nothing shorter than around 6 minutes, there’s not many tracks and not too much chatter either!

Programme #029: 13/11/18 - We Are All Immigrants!

Throughout the world displaced people are racing from oppression, torture, famine and flood, and are now trying to establish new lives amongst increasing hostility. A stream of would-be migrants is travelling through South and Central America while Trump still threatens to build a wall to keep them out. Increasingly right-wing governments declare that immigration is “a problem” and feel the need to protect themselves from newcomers, yet so much prosperity over time has been the result of such migration and settlement. Tonight’s show listens to music that reflects some migrant and refugee experiences.

Programme #028: 16/10/18 - Scandinavian Connections

There’s been a bit of a flurry of records and local performances recently that have a distinct Scandinavian flavour. Tonight we’re going to catch up with a few of them as well as browsing the shelves for other Nordic music to set us up for the coming cooler weather. Expect a good bit of cool ECM jazz but more than smattering of warmer stuff, including a fair bit of unexpected Jamaican dub stylings!

Programme #026: 21/08/18 - Get Off That Phone!

After the interesting selection of music relation to writing and letters in a recent show, I felt the need to get more up-to-date in concept if not in the choice of music. Tonight’s show’s tracks all feature the scourge or blessing (depending on your position) of the modern age, the telephone.

Programme #025: 24/07/18 Plays Some New(ish) Jazz!

Just recently I’ve been deliberately trying to buy and play music that extends beyond my habitual tastes and genres. However, this means that I have managed to get a bit left behind in other areas. I realised this when I recently spent a weekend at the Love Supreme Jazz Festival in Sussex.
I managed to pick up on some incredible performers that I knew the names but had not yet heard. Of course that meant that I came home with a pile of LPs that I needed to share!

Programme #24: 26/06/2018

Sometimes it seems that words are simply not enough. This programme takes its inspiration from an Allen Ginsberg poem and chooses music that makes language and make poetry. All the songs have titles that are a bit short of the full lexicon although their meaning is usually pretty clear. We have some rap, a bit of African music and a smattering of reggae to help the programme along.

THE PLAYLIST:

Programme #23: 29/05/2018
The new LP by Chris Carter, late of Throbbing Gristle, suggests this month’s theme of chemistry and science in general. Programme #22: 01/05/2018

Many say that the art of letter-writing has been lost but that doesn’t appear to be the case when it comes to writing songs and music about letter-writing. This month’s show opens a varied folio of letter tracks taking us on a meandering journey from a 16th century song to a 2017 evocation of the inkjet printer by way of a pencil case full of blues and jazz.

Programme #21: 03/04/2018

It’s been 25 years since the rapper Guru released his “experimental fusion of hip-hop and live jazz” and the occasion has been celebrated by a new vinyl pressing of the album. The record originally came out at a time when the LP format was in rapid decline and I confess that I bought my original copy on CD.
There were lots of collaborators on the album and this show plays some of the tracks as well as tracks from participants in other contexts. There are also couple of tracks that may have been influenced by Guru’s innovative approach...

01 Introduction - Guru, Donald Byrd - Jazzmatazz Volume 1 (1993)
02 Mr. Thomas - Donald Byrd - Black Byrd (1973)

Programme #20: 06/03/2018

One of the delights of crate-digging for secondhand records is sometimes coming up with albums that you should have known but somehow you can’t recall actually hearing. We recently came across "Neo Geo", a record by Ryuichi Sakamoto from the late 1980s, and we were immediately taken by the very impressive list of contributing musicians. And once you get past the sheen of 1980s electronica, it’s a very good record and it set us off on a trail of tracks that relate to this bit of vinyl history…

THE PLAYLIST:

01 Risky - Ryuichi Sakamoto (vocal by Iggy Pop) - Neo Geo (1987)
02 Boomerang - Bootsy Collins (Feat: Justin Johnson) - World Wide Funk (2017)

So, to neatly fill the resulting vacuum, The Tipping Point is bravely stepping in to do our own Electronic January. The show plays a range of electronically tested tracks in different genres. There is (gasp!) a bit of fairly new stuff with other older music, some going back as far as from the 15th Century!

As autumn draws in, we hold our traditional harvest festival with a selection of fairly un-traditional tracks that focus on a vegetarian diet (you know it makes sense).
